25 Mar 2020 TI Methods Speaker Series: Basics of Patient-Oriented Research: A case study in Patient Engagement in Transplant Research
This presentation introduced to the basics of Patient-oriented research (POR) as defined by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR). The speakers described how POR differs from traditional research by engaging patients as research partners, introduced basic concepts and practices in patient engagement and offered a patient partner’s experiences of having a heart transplant that have helped shape her role in patient advocacy in the Transplant Research Foundation’s practice and research. The overall aim was to help participants gain an understanding of how patient engagement can help bring the patient voice into research to ensure that research products are relevant to their intended audience.

- Kristi Coldwell is the Senior Advisor for Transplant Research Advocacy at the Transplant Research Foundation of BC. - Lynne Feehan, PhD, is the Knowledge Translation lead at the BC SUPPORT Unit, whose passion is supporting health researchers to do and share patient-oriented research through meaningful engagement of patients and the public partners throughout the research cycle; from the formation of the research idea through to adoption of research findings in the health system. She is also physiotherapist and clinical associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at UBC with many years working in the health system so also understands the realities of trying to access, summarize and adopt evidence to inform practice and policy decisions in the health system.
- Larry Mróz, PhD, is the Research Services Lead and Patient Engagement Coordinator for the Vancouver office of the BC SUPPORT Unit, where he matches researchers with the support services they need to build their capacity for doing patient oriented research.
