28 Jul 2021 TI Methods Speaker Series: QUADAS-C: a tool for assessing risk of bias in comparative diagnostic accuracy studies
Clinicians are often interested in knowing how the accuracy of two or more diagnostic tests compare. For example, does CT have a higher sensitivity and specificity than ultrasound for diagnosing acute appendicitis? Comparative accuracy studies assess the accuracy of multiple tests and have the potential to yield reliable evidence regarding relative test performance. However, shortcomings in the design, execution, and analysis of these studies may bias their results. QUADAS-C is a risk of bias tool for comparative accuracy studies developed through a Delphi process by 24 experts in test evaluation. It is an extension to QUADAS-2, an existing tool for assessing the quality of diagnostic accuracy studies. QUADAS-C is intended to be used in systematic reviews addressing comparative accuracy questions. However, it may also be used by researchers for informing the design of their study. This talk introduced QUADAS-C and its key features, but also discussed comparative accuracy research more generally, the most important study designs, the rationale for a new risk of bias tool, and the key biases that affect comparative accuracy studies. TITLE: QUADAS-C: a tool for assessing risk of bias in comparative diagnostic accuracy studies
SPEAKER: Dr. Bada Yang, MD, PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam.
About the speaker: Dr. Bada Yang, MD, is a PhD candidate in the Biomarker and Test Evaluation (BiTE) program, at the Department of Epidemiology and Data Science at Amsterdam UMC (University of Amsterdam), The Netherlands. His interests include issues of bias and uncertainty in comparative accuracy research, and meta-epidemiological methods to investigate the effect of study characteristics on study results. He leads the QUADAS-C project.
About the TI Methods Speaker Series: The TI Methods Speaker Series are offered free of charge and everyone is welcome. The event is held at noon on the last Wednesday of each month. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while physical distancing measures are in effect, the TI Methods Speaker Series are offered via videoconference. The presentations are recorded and the video recordings are posted online.
