
17 Nov 2021 Best Evidence Webinar: Evidence-Based Approach to Managing Outpatient Community Acquired Pneumonia
Dr. Davie Wong is an infectious disease consultant at Royal Columbian Hospital and Eagle Ridge Hospital in Fraser Health. He has an office practice in a multidisciplinary clinic in Burnaby called Centrio Medical Specialists. He also provides care for HIV patients at Positive Health Services clinic in Surrey. He is a member of the regional antimicrobial stewardship committee. Davie is a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Infectious Disease at UBC. He obtained his medical degree and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Manitoba, before coming to UBC to complete his infectious disease fellowship.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants should be able to:
- Identify evidence-based findings on history, physical exam, and laboratory investigations that support the diagnosis of pneumonia.
- Understand the microbiology of community acquired pneumonia.
- Distinguish between bacterial pneumonia and viral infections.
- Select the appropriate type, route and duration of antibiotic.
- Predict which patients would benefit most from admission and which can be managed as outpatients using validated scoring tools.
- Incorporate preventative strategies to reduce the risk of community acquired pneumonia.
- Recognize when to refer to a specialist.
