TI Methods Speaker Series: Use of individual participant data meta-analysis to address challenges in mental health assessment research

Individual participant data meta-analyses (IPDMAs) are challenging to conduct, but they can improve the quality and scope of evidence syntheses. They can be used to standardize participant inclusion criteria and outcome variable definitions, and they increase analytical flexibility. They can also be used to address research questions that cannot be easily addressed or are impossible to address using published aggregate results only. In this presentation, Dr. Levis discussed the origins of the DEPRESSD IPDMA Project, and presented a series of projects that have used DEPRESSD data to illustrate and address challenges in mental health assessment research. Specific topics included:

  • selective cutoff reporting
  • variability and bias in small primary studies
  • imperfect reference standards for major depression classification
  • using the PHQ-2 as a pre-screen prior to administering the full PHQ-9
  • estimating depression prevalence based on % above screening cutoffs
  • moving from dichotomous screening approach to prediction model approach

The talk was 45 minutes long, with 10 minutes for questions.

TITLE: Use of individual participant data meta-analysis to address challenges in mental health assessment research

SPEAKER: Brooke Levis, PhD – Research Associate, Centre for Clinical Epidemiology, Lady Davis Institute of Clinical Research, Jewish General Hospital, Montreal, Quebec.

About the speaker: Dr. Brooke Levis completed her MSc and PhD degrees in Epidemiology at McGill University, Canada and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Centre for Prognosis Research, Keele University, UK. She is currently a Research Associate at the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology at the Lady Davis Institute of Medical Research, Jewish General Hospital, Montreal, Quebec. Dr. Levis’ research interests include a clinical focus on mental health assessment and a methodological focus on test evaluation, prediction, and individual participant data meta-analysis (IPDMA). Since 2012, Dr. Levis has helped lead the development of the DEPRESion Screening Data (DEPRESSD) Project, which is an international collaboration that aims to conduct IPDMAs and meta-research projects on depression screening and assessment, and she is now a member of the project steering committee. Through the DEPRESSD Project, she has published high-impact articles addressing clinical research questions related to depression screening as well as methodological studies on bias in depression screening tool evaluation and use. In addition to DEPRESSD, she currently contributes to other international IPDMA projects, to several randomized controlled trials of behavioural health interventions, and to several international teams developing methods, reporting guidelines, and quality assessment tools for test evaluation, prediction, and IPDMA.

About the TI Methods Speaker Series: The TI Methods Speaker Series are offered free of charge and everyone is welcome. The event is held at noon on the last Wednesday of each month. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while physical distancing measures are in effect, the TI Methods Speaker Series are offered via videoconference. The presentations are recorded and the video recordings are posted online.
