An interview with Dr. John Abramson: Influences on medical professionals and prescribing

On his show the Human Upgrade, Dave Asprey talks with Dr. John Abramson about his new book Sickening: How Big Pharma Broke American Health Care and How We Can Repair It.”  This entertaining podcast interview discusses the many problems related to pharmaceutical company control of research, withholding data and shaping information that medical professionals rely on to make important care decisions.  In the course of this interview, Dave Asprey asks him:  “Where do you go for good data, who do you trust for good drug information?”

He answers:

Some organizations do a good job, such as the Therapeutics Initiative at University of British Columbia.   If your listeners have questions and want to know the truth about statins for prevention of heart disease in healthy people they should Google the Therapeutics Initiative and statins in primary prevention and you’ll get the best data that is available.

He goes on to make the case for why governments need to have unbiased technology assessment–independent analyses of the benefits and harms of drugs and devices– in order to ensure our healthcare dollars are used wisely.  This is what we do at the Therapeutics Initiative.
