The vast majority of meta-analyses published in medical journals use the I-squared (I2) statistic to quantify heterogeneity. While this use of I2 is ubiquitous, it is nevertheless incorrect. The I2 statistic does not tell us how much the effect size varies. An I2 value of 25% may reflect trivial heterogeneity but may also reflect substantial heterogeneity. Conversely, an I2 value of 75% may reflect substantial heterogeneity but may also reflect trivial heterogeneity. The statistic that does tell us how much the effect size varies is the prediction interval. This statistic provides the information that we need to make informed decisions, and that many researchers mistakenly believe is being provided by I2.

TITLE: The I-squared statistic does not tell us how much the effect-size varies in meta-analysis
SPEAKER: Dr. Michael Borenstein
About the Speaker: Dr. Michael Borenstein is the author (with Larry Hedges, Julian Higgins, and Hannah Rothstein) of the text Introduction to Meta-Analysis (Wiley, 2009, 2021). He has contributed chapters to books on Meta-Analysis including The Handbook of Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis, and Systematic Reviews in Health Research. He is the author or co-author of numerous papers on meta-analysis including several on the issue of how to discuss heterogeneity. Dr. Borenstein has lectured on meta-analysis at numerous universities and hospitals around the world, and has presented workshops on meta-analysis at the NIH, CDC, and the FDA. Dr. Borenstein is also the author of the text Common Mistakes in Meta-Analysis and How to Avoid Them (2019). A PDF of this text is available at no charge at www.Meta-Analysis-Workshops.com
