Visiting pharmacist Aaron M Tejani and Family Physician Dr. Jessica Otte presented and guided the discussion. Objectives/Description:
Aaron M Tejani’s presentation provided an overview of the evidence for statins in primary and secondary prevention patients, with particular emphasis on the evidence as it relates to patients >70 years. Participants should be able to:
- Summarize the evidence for evidence for statins in patients over 70 years and describe how it is different for primary and secondary patients
- Communicate to patients the likelihood of benefit, harm, and uncertainties in the evidence for statins in this age group
- Use the information from the presentation and the Portrait to reflect on their prescribing and to use the information in shared-decision-making discussions with patients
Dr. Jessica Otte presented on the topic of “Everyone Poops: What to do if your patient can’t” which included learning to:
- Recognize medications that commonly cause constipation
- Appreciate the modalities of bowel care and feel confident employing medications to treat chronic constipation according to best available evidence
- Consider preventative bowel care in all patients receiving opiates, and apply the available evidence to treating opioid-induced constipation
