01 Dec 2023 Using simple pharmacokinetics to optimize prescribing
We invite you to watch the presentation: Using simple pharmacokinetics to optimize prescribing given at the October 2023 TI Annual Course by Dr. Tom Perry.
- Want to know how to predict when a drug might start working (benefit/harm)?
- Want to know when to expect a response to a change in dose?
- Want to know how to predict when a patient may experience rebound/withdrawal if you stop a drug or reduce the dose?
If you have any of these questions…watch this video
The aims of this practical and evidence-informed presentation are to:
- Know how to find a drug elimination half-life (T 1/2) in seconds;
- Understand effects of reduced GFR on drugs eliminated by kidneys;
- Appreciate when effects will peak (4-5 x T 1/2) or wane for drugs used for symptoms.
Dr. Perry co-chairs the Therapeutics Initiative’s Education Working Group and is Editor in Chief of the Therapeutics Letter. His other interests include wilderness canoeing and hiking, environmental conservation, peace and social justice issues, music, reading, and his wife (an experienced RN) and two children (geologist and NP). He likes continuous thinking and learning about medicine and drug therapy, and especially enjoys our interactions with smart and dedicated health care colleagues (students, MDs, pharmacists, NPs, nurses, PAs, and others) throughout British Columbia and around the world.
