28 Jun 2024 Bringing Best Evidence to Clinicians Annual Course 2024
Bringing Best Evidence to Clinicians Annual Course 2024 has already taken place.
—
To mark the 30th anniversary of the Therapeutics Initiative, we introduced a unique format for this year’s event, with an in-person gathering on Friday, October 18, followed by hybrid (virtual and in-person) sessions on Saturday, October 19. Hosted at UBC Robson Square in downtown Vancouver, this central location offered convenient access to nearby popular attractions, making it an ideal location for attendees and family members to explore the city’s offerings outside of conference hours.
Keynote Presentations
Keynote presentations were delivered by internationally renowned experts, Dr. Derelie (aka Dee) Mangin (Professor, McMaster University) and Dr. John Mandrola (Cardiac Electrophysiologist, Baptist Health):
Safe and sound: polypharmacy and rational primary care | Dr. Dee Mangin | View video presentation
Dr. Mangin describes the vital aspects of primary care in maximizing therapeutic benefit and provides examples and areas of challenge for rational treatment in primary care. She also describes the possible negative consequences of these areas of challenge for patient and planetary health. Finally, Dr. Mangin outlines the very practical actions that can be taken in clinical practice to address these problems to improve prescribing, patient and planetary health.
Heart failure: old and new drugs | Dr. John Mandrola | View video presentation
In this presentation, Dr. Mandrola summarizes the evidence for new drugs for heart failure and also describes the role of older drugs in heart failure therapy.

The panel discussion featured the two guest speakers (Dr. Dee Mangin and Dr. John Mandrola), Dr. Mina Tadrous, Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto’s Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy and Canada Research Chair in Real World Evidence and Pharmaceutical Policy, and Dr. Wade Thompson and Dr. Tom Perry from the Therapeutics Initiative.
Keynote Speakers
Derelie (aka Dee) Mangin, MD. Professor, McMaster University
Dr. Mangin’s research has focused on multimorbidity, rational prescribing, and innovative models of primary care. Over the last five years, Mangin has been involved in over $28 million in research funding, including more than $4 million as principal investigator for polypharmacy and multimorbidity research in Canada. She has authored or co-authored 118 journal articles, 8 book chapters, edited 1 textbook, and has been cited 4111 times. One of her key accomplishments has been the development of the Team Approach to Polypharmacy Evaluation and Reduction (TAPER) clinical pathway to support rational prescribing for seniors as part of routine preventive care in older adults. This pathway is being implemented and evaluated in health care settings in Canada and Australia. Click here for more information
