Evidence 101: Educational Sessions
When: Wednesday, November 29 (Part 1) and Thursday, December 7 (Part 2), 2017 @ 10:00am – noon
Where: MoH Conference Centre, 1515 Blanshard Street, Victoria, BC
What: An educational presentation by Dr. Aaron Tejani to learn or review:
- Levels of evidence as it pertains to health care intervention research.
- Why are focused clinical research questions critical?
- What is meant by a logical sequence of questioning?
- Differences between narrative reviews and systematic reviews.
- What is meant by a meta-analysis and its relation to systematic reviews?
- Where do expert opinion and clinical practice guidelines fit into the levels of evidence and why?
- Reporting bias and why it is important to look for unpublished infor-mation/data for clinical research.
- Reasons why a structured and critical risk of bias assessment of all healthcare research is important.
- The December 7 session builds on the November 29 session
Dr. Aaron Tejani is a researcher with the Therapeutics Initiative, an editor with the Cochrane Hypertension group, a clinical assistant professor with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UBC), and medication use evaluation coordinator with Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services. He is particularly interested in teaching healthcare professionals how to critically appraise research publications and systematic reviews on medical interventions.
