TI Methods Speaker Series: What’s counted and what counts: Metrics in scholarly publishing

In this presentation, Dr. Michele Avissar-Whiting discussed the ways in which journals, authors, and individual articles are metricized. Love them or hate them, metrics have been used to convey impact, interest, and status in academic publishing for decades, and the number and variety of different types of metrics continues to grow every few years. But how are these metrics derived and are they ever a good proxy for quality? The talk discussed the advantages and limitations of “classic” journal-level metrics like the impact factor as well as novel approaches to understanding quality at the article level.
